David Ian Hewlett (born April 18th, 1968 in Redhill, Surrey, England, United Kingdom) is a British-born Canadian actor and director who guest-starred on Without A Trace in the Season 2 episode, Hawks and Handsaws as child-murderer and pedophile, Fred Watkins.
He is also best known to sci-fi fans all over the role for his role as Dr. Meredith Rodney McKay in the sci-fi series, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe and to other fans for playing David Worth in the 1997 Canadian science fiction psychological horror movie Cube, as Grant Jansky on the 1996 Canadian TV series Traders, and as Douglas Hunsiker in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Biography[]
Born on April 18th, 1968 in the town of Redhill, Surrey, United Kingdom, Hewlett and his family later emigrated to Canada while Hewlett was four years old.
Hewlett started acting in 1984 at the age of sixteen and dropped out of high school to presumably purse acting full time. He made his first ever TV appearance in the 1980s TV series, The Edison Twins, playing a pyromaniac named Howard.
Hewlett also appeared in many low-budget horror films, such as The Darkside where he played a male drug addict and the minor cult favorites Scanners II: The New Order and Pin.
He also guest starred in several television series. In 1996, he landed one of his better-known roles, as the smart yet anti-social genius, Grant Jansky on the Canadian TV series, Traders.
In 1997, Hewlett worked again with Vincenzo Natali, an American-born director Hewlett had befriended during high school with Hewlett starring in the critically acclaimed thriller Cube as David Worth the architect, a role that saw the rise of his stardom due to the commercial success of the low budget Canadian film.
Five years later, in 2002, Hewlett appeared on the Canadian/American sci-fi series Stargate SG-1 as Dr. Rodney McKay.
Two years later, in 2004, Hewlett joined the cast of the SG-1 spin-off series, Stargate Atlantis which was ultimately cancelled after five seasons in 2009.
In 2009. Hewlett also appeared in the third series in the Stargate TV franchise, Stargate Universe.
In recent years, Hewlett has turned his hand to directing, making his directional debut with the 2006 movie, A Dog's Breakfast, in 2011 with Rage of the Yeti and now in 2014 with Debug which stars his younger sister, Kate Hewlett who appeared with him in A Dog's Breakfast as well as Hewlett's former Stargate Atlantis co-star, Jason Momoa.
Personal Life[]
Hewlett was previously married to Soo Garay before the two divorced in 2004.
Three years later in 2007, Hewlett married film producer Jane Loughman and the couple also have a son, Sebastian "Baz" Flynn Loughman Hewlett as well as a dog named "Mars".
